In
New Zealand and Australia, the friendly Gecko (Hoplodactylus granulatus,
or Hoplodactylus pacificus) is renown for changing its patterns
(though not its general color, to blend with the environment. Geckos
in the Pacific Rim (especially South East Asia) are also considered
lucky. Notably, the geckos in New Zealand are unique for bearing
live young. Kind of pointless; bearing dead young, wouldn't you
think? Actually, what we mean is that they don't bother with eggs.
Just thought you should know.
When
Doug founded Art Gecko (a play on Art Deco) and Studio Gecko, he
wanted to indicate a behind the scenes, adaptable prowess and to
engender a positive, creative response.
The
hand tooled type style and the watercolor illustration established
the illustrative creativity, and the clean bold layout set the design
tone the firm wanted. The bulk of Gecko's work was highly illustrative
in nature, so the theme carried well.
