Doug
Founded Studio Gecko as a design boutique in Sydney 1987, servicing
the multinational ad agency circuit. Later that year, he formed
Art Gecko as an illustration service, and created a holding company,
Gecko Pty, Ltd. for tax consolidation.
Through
an aggressive campaign of proposals and print marketing, Gecko acquired
some high profile projects. By offering a "pay only if we succeed"
incentive, Doug was able to very quickly bring in enough work to
lift the company's position onto the radar screen of Australian
marketing.
The
first twelve months saw some loss leader marketing efforts, but
within eighteen months the firms income had exceeded a million dollars
(AUS), and staffing levels were just over a dozen.
By
the time the firm was sold to partners in 1992, it was generating
more then 3.5 million (AUS) from the two divisions, and was representing
clients such as the Australian and Soviet governments, Johnnie Walker,
Wella, Johnson and Johnson, Young and Rubicam, Wunderman Worldwide,
McCann Erikson and J Walter Thompson.
